From Social Media to Personal Book Reviews: My Story

Hello Reader! I’m Sam.

I’ve been wrestling with creating my book review blog for quite some time. I wasn’t sure if I had the chops to become an authority on recommending books. That is… until I recommended books left and right to coworkers and friends, posting small reviews on social media.

Throughout the years, I’ve amassed a large collection of books, read and unread. I’ve posted reviews on sites like Goodreads and Fable. But, when you post on their sites, you’re generating content for them, not for yourself. Instead, I decided to leave those forums behind. I wanted to create this space to post lists, rankings, and long-form reviews on books. Don’t get me wrong, I love Fable. Its interactive stats are funny. It is incredibly user friendly. The book club feature is unmatched. You’ll see me referencing Fable multiple times.

I grew up reading chapter books well before it was deemed appropriate for a child to read longer books. My dad took me to the library every week, and I didn’t go for the picture books after a while. I cut my teeth on The Great Illustrated Classics and Wishbones books. Since we didn’t have a TV, I devoured books by the dozen each week. I was that kid who had a book in hand at recess. I got in trouble for reading well into the night.

Now that I’m an adult with grown-up money, the temptation to spend an unreasonable amount on books is powerful. I wanted to surround myself with bookshelves full of books. It doesn’t matter if I wouldn’t be getting to them for quite a while. Every year, I set a lofty Reading Challenge goal on Goodreads, and then the race began to fulfill it. But there was a problem with just setting the goal. How was I going to enrich my experience with each book?

I made a decision quite a few years later. I would dedicate time to writing reviews. I would also create lists about my books. I would pair it with filming videos with the reviews. If you’re into watching TikTok videos of book reviews, that will be coming too. Don’t worry!

I can tell you what to expect about book genres. I read a lot of fantasy, thriller, grimdark, dystopian, and classics. I also try to keep up with new and current popular reads. Still, those aren’t my first priority because I have a backlog of books I want to read.

If you’re still here, welcome to my journey! Please follow me on Bluesky and Fable, where I’ll post blog post links. I won’t spam you, I promise.
